WORST FILMS OF 2016

Well it's that time of the year, what time? Well, if the main image there wasn't a tip, it's time to talk about the worst movies of the year. Keep in mind, I haven't seen every film released in 2016, but I have seen plenty. This list isn't about how a bad a film looks, or if it is the worst in technical terms, no, this list is about which films hurt the most to sit through, the ones that turned out worse then expected, even if what I expected wasn't much. Keep in mind, this is my list, not the end all, be all list of worst movies, so please, be respectful, now for some not-so honorable mentions.

P.S. Some spoilers will be found here.

LA LA LAND-REVIEW

Musicals are wonderful, they are fanciful, they can be beautiful, joyous and sad all at once, while also being reminiscent of Hollywood's Golden Age, La La Land aims to recapture the magic of that era. In some regards, this is a fantastic film, but in one area it falls just short of greatness, the result is a movie that is good, but ends up feeling like a misfire.

ROGUE ONE:A STAR WARS STORY-REVIEW

Disney's latest is a test, a test to see if they can make a Star Wars film, outside the main series, and they've nailed it. Sure, this is basically just another tale, but it feels different enough to give hope for the future of the franchise, a future that isn't restrained by making everything about the Skywalker clan. Oddly enough though, this also comes at just the right time, where a little hope is needed in the real world.

DESPICABLE ME 3-TRAILER REVIEW

I like this, but I'm prepared to be disappointed.

JACO THE GALACTIC PATROLMAN-REVIEW

Well here's something I haven't done before, a manga review! Don't expect this to be a common feature, I'm not the most fond of Japanese comics or cartoons, but there are some I enjoy. Akira Toriyama is definitely one of the best, if not the best in the business, which shouldn't be a surprise, the man has practically defined what modern manga/anime has become. Jaco The Galactic Patrolman, is one of Toriyama's charming pieces of work, maybe not the most, but it's solid.

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES-TRAILER REVIEW

Upfront, HO-LY CRAP! This looks great, and I can't wait to see how this trilogy wraps up, but if you want more here goes.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS-REVIEW

Illumination Studios kinda sucks right? I'm not the only one who has picked this up right? I don't hate their animation style, I don't even hate their characters, it's just all so cheap and generic. I'm not joking when I say that, I was almost tempted to copy and paste a lot of different quotes from my past reviews to make a point, but no I'd rather just say it, The Secret Life of Pets, is the most generic movie I've seen all year. No this isn't the worst, it's not even the worst animated feature (Hello Norm!), but it's probably the perfect example of why Illumination kinda sucks.

THE SHALLOWS-REVIEW

No movie about a shark, will ever be better than Jaws, that movie has left so much of an impact, it's not even worth trying. The Shallows is not better than Jaws, but, there's no denying it's an effectively frightening film.

DOES RELIGION RUIN MOVIES?

The short answer is obviously no, religion has no way of ruining a film, some films are even enriched by religion. However, religion has been a factor of some real stinkers in recent years. Whether it's the Christian films that force others to follow the same faith, or films based on the tales of certain religions, they seem more abundant then ever, but do they have to be so bad? So many just stop trying to be anything but, pandering crap to their people that it often feels like all religious films are doom to suck. Well I'm here to argue that religion can be good for films.

THE IRON GIANT-REVIEW

Everyone's praised The Iron Giantbut is it really all that good? Yes of course it is, that shouldn't be a question. I don't think I've ever met a single person who disliked this film, which is surprising, but in many ways speaks volumes of the film and it's impact. So why does this movie work? Well there's heart, quality animation, and above all else, a unique vision in animation that wasn't common for animated features back then, it really stands out.

10 MOVIES I WANT DISNEY TO MAKE

Disney animation has produced a lot of gems, as well as some stinkers, it happens. I personally have, to a certain degree, a fondness for all their films, even the bad ones have something worthwhile. So today, I decided to bring you a list of movies I'd love to see Disney Animation tackle, keep in mind this is my list, so please, if there's a choice you dislike feel free to discuss why, but don't insult me over it.

MOANA-REVIEW

Once more I find myself praising a Disney made film this year, shocker. It's not that I'm paid by Disney (trust me, I'd do so much if I were), or I'm some kind of "Disney can do no wrong" kind of guy, I mean have you seen Chicken Little? This year has just been phenomenal in the critical side of things for Disney, with the exception of two films, Moana is definitely not joining that small group.

BEAUTY & THE BEAST-TRAILER REVIEW

Is there really any point to this remake? Besides making all the money for Disney I mean.

HUSH-REVIEW

Home invasion thrillers are pretty stale for the most part right? There are clever ones, but so many just follow the same tropes, it's repetitive, creates the same plot-holes again and again, it's stale. So I decided to watch Hush, which has been praised, I assumed for changing the formula, but as I came to find out, it does not.

MONSTER TRUCKS-TRAILER REVIEW

This is a movie that's coming out and one day you'll be dead, how funny isn't it?

BLACK MIRROR S1E2-REVIEW

I continue my run through of Black Mirror with Fifteen Million Merits, an episode set in a future where humanity is obsessed with entertainment... So our current world. Joking aside, this is another fascinating episode of the show, while parts of it felt a bit long, as well as unnecessary, I can't say I didn't enjoy this one. In fact this one may be better than the last episode.

KONG:SKULL ISLAND-TRAILER REVIEW

Well, I was interested before, but man, this has risen to my must watch list of 2017.

ARRIVAL-REVIEW

Here's a movie that seems to have fallen under a lot of people's radars, an intelligent sci-fi feature about a college professor (played by Amy Adams), and a scientist (played by Jeremy Renner), being tasked to translate messages from an alien race. In a film landscape where sci-if tends to mean action, it's nice to get a movie where the tension is trying to figure out everything before the action starts, it's brilliant, different, as well as fun. That last phrase is important by the way, yes this isn't action fare, but action isn't the only way to get to fun.

BLACK MIRROR S1E1-REVIEW

I honestly feel disappointed that I'm barely learning of this show.

One of my all time favorite shows is The Twilight Zone, it's odd, unique, perhaps a bit outdated, but smarter than a majority of tv ever has been. I bring this up because, my latest review, is that of Black Mirror, specifically the first episode The National Anthem, which feels like a modern take on The Twilight Zone, and from what I'm told that's not coincidental, this takes inspiration from that.

FIFTY SHADES DARKER (TRAILER)-REVIEW

Here's a request... Well, crap, why this one?

TRANSFORMERS DEVASTATION-REVIEW

Before we start, I just want to say I'm deeply saddened by the news right now, I won't say which, just look at the date of this review, you should be able to figure out what I'm saddened by.Fuck.

20 YEARS LATER-GET OVER THE ORIGINAL POKEMON

I know what you're thinking, yes, despite having some lame ideas for Pokemon, the franchise is at a better place than it's ever been. Yes even if one of the little monsters is based on trash, I still think Pokemon is better now, than it was when I started playing Red Version all those years ago. Keep in mind I'm only talking about the games, which better represents the franchise, not the mediocre cartoon, sorry if that offends you.

I HATE POPULAR CARTOONS

Okay, obviously I don't mean that, there are plenty of cartoons I like that are popular, but every time I bring up the ones I dislike,it feels like someone is getting a heart attack. So for today, here's a list of five cartoons I dislike that are popular.

INAPPROPRIATELY SMART:A LOOK AT SETH ROGEN

Seth Rogen has a reputation for making vulgar comedy films, funny or not (I think they are for the most part) we know they are hits among the masses. Today, in honor of his upcoming release (Sausage Party) I present to you a brief look through some of his filmography, specifically the ones he had a lot of involvement in and the ones I feel define his career the most. Before we start, yes there will be some minor spoilers throughout, maybe even major ones for the films we'll run through, keep that in mind.

DO I PREFER MARVEL OVER DC?

I don't make it a secret, I love the MCU, it's also no secret that I hate both Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman (ESPECIALLY that one), so am I just a Marvel fanboy? Do I hate everything DC?

CAN THE NEW GHOSTBUSTERS BE BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL?

GHOSTBUSTERS (2016)-REVIEW

So let's be real here for a bit, Sony's marketing team REALLY dropped the ball on this one, personally I didn't hate the trailers, but I understand why some others did. I say some, largely because I know most people who hated these trailers online were, in all honesty, losers who were just pissed that women got to star in the film. If you hate this movie after watching it, fine I understand, different opinions and all, but if you hated this before watching, went out of your way to rage endlessly at the actresses, demanding male leads, or whatever else relating to that MRA crap, yeah you suck. Anyway, let's review the new Ghostbusters, the faster I praise this, the quicker Disney, I mean, Sony, I mean Fox, I mean... No one is paying me.

COME AT ME GHOSTBRO! I'M WATCHING THE NEW GHOSTBUSTERS

I want to see the new Ghostbusters movie and I hope it's good; why is that so controversial to say nowadays? I know the trailers have been less then perfect, but given the directors track record and the talent, yeah this may be a great fun time, so forgive me for not caring what the online geeks think about this.

THE PURGE:ELECTION YEAR-REVIEW

This movie chose a great time to be released, I'm not sure if that will affect its long-term shelf-life, but for now, this movie feels appropriate.

WHAT WENT WRONG WITH THE ICE AGE SERIES?

As the first year to feature an Academy Award for animated films, I'd wager 2002 was the year animation gained real traction in the United States, Shrek won the award proving Disney wasn't the only studio worth looking at, while Ice Age proved to be a hit among people, then the sequels came. While Shrek bowed for the last time six years ago, Ice Age keeps pumping out sequels and the result is a continually devolving mess, what went wrong? Well I have some answers to that.

MARS ATTACKS!-REVIEW

As most of you know, this week saw the release of Independence Day:Resurgence, a  sequel to the 20 year old movie that to some is an action/sci-fi mess, while to others it's a dumb, occasionally fun, product of its time,  I'm somewhat in the middle, yeah parts are fun but the movie as a whole sucks. I bring up Independence Day because I originally wanted to do something relating to it for this week, but instead I decided to highlight a sort of forgotten film that also honors the classic B-movies of the 50's, Mars Attacks!.

WHY STARRO SHOULD BE IN THE JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE!

I hate Batman v. Superman, that much I've stated many times before, so it shouldn't be a surprise that I'm not looking forward to Justice League. DC  just can't seem to do much right at this point, well largely in movies, but you know what could've saved them? You know what could've made me more interested in the Justice League? one character, STARRO.

FINDING DORY-REVIEW

Thirteen years later comes a sequel and I'm pleased to announce it's good, also it only took three minutes into the movie for me to cry, a new record I suppose.

LEADERSHIP-THE PIXAR VILLAIN FORMULA

We are told in life to follow our leaders, but what if our leaders are leading us to something bad? That is something I get out of Pixar movies. Disney has often featured obvious villains, even if they're characters in some form of power, they tend to be/look untrustworthy right from the start; for example, Jafar may be in a high position right from the start, but he also is presented as a villain right from the start, by contrast Auto from WALL-E, may be an obvious villain, but he isn't presented as such at first, in fact the only tip is his look being reminiscent of HAL-9000; that to me is the key difference between Pixar and Disney Animation villains, regardless of their appearance, Pixar villains are in most cases not presented as villains right away, this is the Pixar villain formula.

WHY THE LEGEND OF ZELDA SHOULD BE A MOVIE FRANCHISE!

This week we see the release of Warcraft, the latest videogame adaptation to hit movie screens, early word says it's not good, which sucks, but it did get me thinking, you know what fantasy videogame deserves a movie franchise? The Legend of Zelda.
