I don't think I can really say much about this film that hasn't been said already, Reefer Madness is by all accounts a funny as hell, absurd piece of propaganda. Sure, I'm not a (as this film might put it) reefer addict, but I can't say the way this movie portrays "marihuana" is even remotely accurate. Every time someone's lighting a blunt up I just wanna laugh so hard, the characters are portrayed so cartoon-like, to say that they're an exaggeration is an understatement. If anything, the weed in Reefer Madness is closer to the laughing gas the Joker shoots at Gotham. In short, this is without a doubt an unintentionally hilarious feature about the "dangers" of weed.
If you weren't aware, this is a film from the 1930's, which makes its stance a little more understandable, but no less hilarious, did anyone really believe in this movie? Are the effects of weed so dangerous, that some believe this is truth to some degree? I hope not. Again, not to endorse weed, but you'd have to be pretty moronic to believe this is in any way true.
While this film was originally black and white, I chose to watch the colorized version, largely for one reason, the smoke appears in different colors (yes, the people working on it were aware of what they were doing). While the film is funny enough on it's own, yeah, the color really does add a level of oddness to it, there's a slight charm there that feels right at home with the propaganda at play.
I shouldn't have to tell you, but please WATCH Reefer Madness, this is one hilarious bad film. Sure, it's not a pretty film, it's not a smart film, it's not well-acted, but it somehow, in it's incompetence as a film warning us of the dangers of marijuana, becomes an amazing hour of entertainment.
